Parenting Support

Because Parenting Doesn't Come With a Manual

Parenting can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life, but it can also be one of the most challenging. You can love your child deeply and still feel frustrated, exhausted, overwhelmed or unsure whether you're handling things the right way.

Perhaps you're managing frequent meltdowns, anxiety, defiance, emotional outbursts or difficulties with routines. Maybe your child is struggling with friendships, school, confidence or managing big emotions, and you're not sure how best to help.

Or perhaps you're simply feeling worn down by the constant demands of parenting.

You can be a loving, caring parent and still find parenting incredibly hard sometimes.

When the Strategies You've Tried Aren't Working

Most parents have moments when they wonder whether they're getting it right. You might find yourself repeating instructions, negotiating over everyday tasks or trying to stay calm when your child is becoming increasingly upset. Perhaps you've tried rewards, consequences, reassurance or being firmer, but nothing seems to work consistently.

You might notice: -

  • Frequent emotional outbursts or meltdowns

  • Difficulty with listening, cooperation or following instructions

  • Anxiety, clinginess or avoidance

  • Challenges with boundaries and routines

  • Sibling conflict or difficulties with friendships

  • School refusal or reluctance to attend

  • Emotional sensitivity, frustration or low confidence

  • Feeling disconnected from your child or unsure how to respond

When these difficulties continue, it's easy to begin questioning your parenting or feeling as though everyone else has things figured out.

Understanding What's Behind the Behaviour

Children's behaviour is often a way of communicating something they may not yet have the skills or words to explain. What looks like defiance, stubbornness or attention-seeking may sometimes reflect anxiety, frustration, emotional overwhelm, unmet needs or difficulty managing expectations.

For children with ADHD, autism or other neurodevelopmental differences, challenges with flexibility, attention, sensory processing or emotional regulation can also influence behaviour. Understanding what's happening beneath the surface can help parents respond more effectively. This doesn't mean removing boundaries or allowing every behaviour. It's about combining warmth, connection and understanding with clear, consistent expectations.

Supporting Your Child Without Losing Yourself

Parenting can become particularly exhausting when you feel responsible for managing everyone's emotions. You might find yourself constantly trying to prevent meltdowns, worrying about your child's wellbeing or putting your own needs aside to keep things running smoothly. Some parents become caught between wanting to be understanding and worrying they're being too lenient. Others feel guilty after losing their patience or responding in ways they later regret.

Parenting support can help you develop greater confidence in your responses, reduce unhelpful patterns and create more positive interactions with your child.

How Psychological Therapy Can Help

Parenting support provides a collaborative, non-judgemental space to explore challenges and develop strategies that suit your child's needs and your family's circumstances.

Support may focus on: -

  • Understanding the reasons behind challenging behaviour

  • Responding to emotional outbursts and meltdowns

  • Supporting anxious children without unintentionally reinforcing avoidance

  • Developing clear, consistent and realistic boundaries

  • Improving communication and connection

  • Supporting children with ADHD, autism or emotional regulation difficulties

  • Managing parent stress, frustration and overwhelm

  • Building confidence in your parenting decisions

Depending on the circumstances, support may involve parent-focused sessions, individual therapy for your child or a combination of both.

You Don't Have to Get It Right Every Time

Children don't need perfect parents. They benefit from caregivers who are willing to understand their needs, provide consistent support and repair relationships when things don't go to plan.

At Our Therapy Place, parenting support is compassionate, practical and tailored to your family. With a background in both psychology and education, I bring an understanding of children's emotional, behavioural and developmental needs, alongside the everyday realities of parenting.

Parenting isn't about having all the answers. Sometimes it's about having the right support to find what works for your family.
