Helping Children Build Confidence, Emotional Skills & Coping Strategies

Anxiety in Children

Anxiety in children can present as: -

  • Separation distress

  • School refusal

  • Excessive reassurance seeking

  • Physical complaints (tummy aches, headaches)

  • Avoidance of new situations

  • Sleep difficulties

Early support can prevent anxiety patterns from becoming entrenched.

Behavioural Difficulties

Behaviour is often a communication of underlying emotional needs.

Challenges may include: -

  • Emotional outbursts

  • Defiance

  • Low frustration tolerance

  • Withdrawal

  • Social difficulties

Therapy focuses on understanding what is driving the behaviour, not just managing it.

Emotional Regulation

Children are still learning to: -

  • Name emotions

  • Manage frustration

  • Tolerate disappointment

  • Self-soothe

  • Express needs safely

Sessions include structured emotional skill-building tailored to your child’s developmental stage.

Play-Based & Practical Elements

For younger children, therapy may incorporate: -

  • Play-based activities

  • Visual tools

  • Emotion charts

  • Stories and metaphor

  • Behavioural skill-building exercises

All strategies are evidence-informed and practical.

How Therapy Helps

With children, I work through: -

  • Emotional literacy and regulation skills

  • Building resilience and flexibility

  • Supporting parents with practical strategies

  • Strengthening the parent-child relationship

  • Helping children feel safe and understood

When children feel safer in their bodies and emotions, behaviour naturally becomes more manageable.

What Sessions Look Like

Children communicate through play, drawing and activity as much as words.

Initial sessions focus on: -

  • Helping your child feel safe and understood

  • Observing emotional patterns

  • Gently building emotional language

  • Introducing regulation tools in age-appropriate ways

Parent Involvement

Parent involvement is essential.

This may include: -

  • Parent-only sessions

  • Behavioural strategies

  • Emotion coaching guidance

  • School collaboration where needed

With a background in education as well as psychology, I understand classroom dynamics and developmental expectations.

Parent involvement is an important part of the process. Practical strategies are shared so that skills learned in sessions can be reinforced at home. The goal is to reduce distress and strengthen your child’s ability to manage big feelings over time.

Next Step

If your child is struggling with anxiety, behaviour or emotional regulation, early support can make a meaningful difference.

Parents can: -

  • Contact the practice to discuss your child’s needs

  • Book an initial assessment session

  • Speak with your GP about a Mental Health Care Plan

Early support can make a meaningful difference.
